HLS (HTTP Live Streaming)

HLS is Apple's adaptive streaming protocol that delivers video content as small HTTP-downloadable files organized by playlists.

HLS is the most widely supported streaming protocol globally. Content is segmented into small files (typically 2-10 seconds) referenced by M3U8 playlists. HLS supports adaptive bitrate switching, DRM, and closed captions.
